Founded in 2010 by an person who overcame substance abuse, the Meqoamia Community Development Organization (MCDO) has emerged as a pioneering non-profit Civil Society Organization (CSO) dedicated to combating addiction in Ethiopia. Inspired by the vision of Elias Kalayu and fueled by the power of peer support, MCDO has become a cornerstone of hope for countless individuals struggling with substance use disorders.
MCDO offers a comprehensive approach to addiction treatment and prevention, providing services ranging from early intervention and rehabilitation to ongoing recovery support. By recognizing the multifaceted nature of addiction, the organization delivers tailored care to individuals at every stage of their journey. Beyond direct service delivery, MCDO is a staunch advocate for public health. Their instrumental role in the ratification of Ethiopia’s tobacco and alcohol control proclamation highlights their commitment to creating a healthier society.
Through partnerships with the Ministry of Health and universities, MCDO has established essential rehabilitation centers and training programs. These initiatives expand access to treatment while building capacity within the healthcare system. To date, MCDO has directly impacted the lives of over 800 individuals and reached millions through prevention programs.
