At a time when intensified drug prevention efforts are urgently needed, MCDO achieved a major milestone as its Expert representatives, Mr. Elias Kalayu Abrha (MCDO Executive Director) and Ms. Sara Deguma , participated in the African Union’s “Training of Master Trainers for University‑Based Youth Engagement in Drug Prevention,” held in Seychelles.

This training was designed to create a cadre of master trainers capable of scaling up evidence‑based, youth‑centred drug prevention programmes within universities across Africa.

🎯 Core of the Training: The UPC 81 Youth Engagement Trainers Manual

The training was grounded in the “UPC 81 Youth Engagement Trainers Manual” – a globally recognised curriculum developed by the Colombo Plan Drug Advisory Programme (DAP). The manual covers the science of addiction, evidence‑based prevention strategies, and peer education approaches that actively engage young people as agents of change.

🌍 Significance for Ethiopia and Africa

Ethiopia, like many African nations, has a predominantly young population (over 70% under the age of 30). However, rising drug use prevalence, gaps in prevention services, and a lack of sustainable university‑based youth engagement remain major challenges.

This training is critically important for Ethiopia and Africa for the following reasons:

1. Sustainable capacity building – Trained master trainers can cascade the training to others at the national level.
2. Institutionalisation within universities – Programmes can be integrated into existing academic and campus life structures.
3. Evidence‑based approach – The UPC 81 manual draws on international research and best practices.
4. Strengthening Pan‑Africanism – The African Union is creating a coordinated framework for youth drug prevention across member states.

የአፍሪካ ህብረት “የአሰልጣኞች አሰልጣኝ ሥልጠና” ላይ የ መቋሚያ የማህበረሰብ ልማት ድርጅት ተሳትፎ – ለኢትዮጵያ እና ለአፍሪካ ተስፋ ሰጪ ጅምር ነው።

በሰይሼልስ ቪክቶሪያ፣ በ ግንቦት 25 እስከ 29 2017 ዓ.ም.

ከፍተኛ የሱስ መከላከል ጥረቶች በሚደረጉበት በዚህ ወቅት፣ MCDO የስራ ባልደረባ የሆኑት ወ/ሮ ሳራ ደጉማ እና አቶ ኤልያስ ካልአዩ አብርሃ በአፍሪካ ህብረት (African Union) አዘጋጅነት በሰይሼልስ በተካሄደው “Training of Master Trainers for University‑Based Youth Engagement in Drug Prevention” ላይ በማሳተፍ የትልቅ ምዕራፍ ጉዞአችንን ጀምረናል።

ይህ ሥልጠና በወጣቶች ላይ ያነጣጠረ፣ በማስረጃ ላይ የተመሠረተ የሱስ መከላከል ፕሮግራም በዩኒቨርሲቲዎች ውስጥ ለማስፋፋት የሚችሉ የማስተማሪያ አሰልጣኞችን (master trainers) ለማፍራት ታስቦ የተዘጋጀ ነው።

🎯 የሥልጠናው ዋና መሠረት፦ UPC 81 Youth Engagement Trainers Manual

ሥልጠናው የተመካበት ዋና መመሪያ “UPC 81 Youth Engagement Trainers Manual” ሲሆን፣ ይኸው ማኑዋል በኮሎምቦ ፕላን የአደንዛዥ ዕፅ አማካሪ ፕሮግራም (Colombo Plan Drug Advisory Programme) እና በዓለም አቀፍ የሱስ መከላከል ባለሙያዎች ዘንድ እንደ ምርጥ ተሞክሮ ይቆጠራል። ይህ ማኑዋል የሱስ ሳይንስ (The Science of Addiction)፣ በማስረጃ ላይ የተመሠረተ የመከላከል ስልት፣ እንዲሁም ወጣቶችን አጋሪ በማድረግ የፔር ኤጁኬሽን (peer education) አቀራረቦችን ያካትታል።

🌍 ለኢትዮጵያ እና ለአፍሪካ ያለው ጠቀሜታ

ኢትዮጵያ ከአፍሪካ ሌሎች አገራት ጋር በሚመሳሰል መልኩ፣ ከፍተኛ የወጣቶች ቁጥር (ከጠቅላላ ሕዝብ ፸ በመቶ የሚሆነው ከ፴ ዓመት በታች ነው) ያላት ሀገር ናት። ነገር ግን የሱስ ዕፅ አጠቃቀም ተመን እያደገ መምጣቱ፣ የመከላከል አገልግሎት ክፍተት፣ እንዲሁም በዩኒቨርሲቲ ደረጃ ዘላቂ የሆነ የወጣት ተሳትፎ እጦት ትልቅ ፈተና ነው።

ይህ ሥልጠና ከሚከተሉት አንጻር ለኢትዮጵያ እና ለአፍሪካ በሙሉ ትልቅ ጠቀሜታ አለው፦

1. ዘላቂ አቅም መገንባት – የተሰለጠኑት ማስተማሪያ አሰልጣኞች በየአገራቸው ሌሎች አሰልጣኞችን ማሰልጠን ይችላሉ።
2. በዩኒቨርሲቲ ደረጃ ማቋቋሚያ – ፕሮግራሙ ከመደበኛ ትምህርት ጋር ተያይዞ ሊሰራ ይችላል።
3. በማስረጃ ላይ የተመሠረተ አካሄድ – UPC 81 ማኑዋል ከዓለም አቀፍ የምርምር ውጤቶች የተወሰደ ነው።
4. ፓን አፍሪካኒዝምን ማጠናከር – የአፍሪካ ህብረት የወጣቶችን የሱስ መከላከል እንቅስቃሴ በማስተባበር የጋራ ማዕቀፍ እየፈጠረ ነው።

🔭 ወደፊት ያለው ጉዞ

MCDO ይህ ተሳትፎ በኢትዮጵያ ብቻ ሳይሆን በአፍሪካ እና በዓለም ዙሪያ ጤናማ ነገ ለመገንባት ትልቅ አስተዋጽኦ እንደሚኖረው በሙሉ እምነት ያምናል። በቀጣይ በዩኒቨርሲቲዎች ውስጥ የማስተማሪያ አሰልጣኞች ሥልጠና በማካሄድ፣ የUPC 81 ማኑዋልን ማላመድ እና ከአፍሪካ ህብረት ጋር በመተባበር ሥራችንን እንቀጥላለን።
