Welcome to the Meqoamia Community Development Organization (MCDO)!

About the Meqoamia Community Development Organization (MCDO)

At the Meqoamia Community Development Organization (MCDO), we’re incredibly proud to serve our community and stand with those on their journey to recovery. Founded in 2010 by passionate advocates who truly understand the challenges of substance abuse, our core mission is to offer vital treatment, prevention, and recovery coaching, along with essential psychosocial support. What truly makes MCDO special is our unique peer-support approach, deeply rooted in personal recovery journeys – just like that of our founder, Elias Kalayu. His self-help book, ‘Meqoamia – The Science of Addiction,’ is one of Ethiopia’s most valuable Amharic resources for recovery support, a testament to our commitment to improving public health through advocacy, education, and building stronger communities.

We’ve been on a mission to combat substance abuse and champion public health, driven by the belief that recovery is possible for everyone. Our journey began with Elias’s personal triumph over addiction, and this lived experience forms the very heart of our peer-support philosophy, fueling our empathy, understanding, and truly effective approach. We’re proud of the tangible differences we’re making: from spearheading comprehensive tobacco control legislation and rolling out impactful smoke-free initiatives in Addis Ababa and Dire Dawa, to reaching over a million people with vital awareness campaigns – our dedication to public health is unwavering. We’re not just an organization; we’re a movement built on strong partnerships and a shared vision to become Ethiopia’s leading training provider for Drug Demand Reduction (DDR).

Our Approach: Comprehensive Care, Community-Driven Impact

MCDO tackles substance abuse from every angle, understanding that it’s a complex public health challenge. Our programs are designed to meet individuals where they are, from prevention to long-term recovery:

  • School Campus Nicotine and Tobacco-Free (SCNTF) Initiative: We’re on the front lines, engaging young people aged 10-24 to prevent early initiation of tobacco use. Protecting our youth means safeguarding our future.
  • 100% Smoke-Free Addis Campaign: We’re transforming Addis Ababa into a smoke-free city, working with health inspectors, local officials, and law enforcement to create healthier environments for everyone. We also empower families with the knowledge to support their loved ones facing addiction.
  • University-Based Anti-Addiction Community Movement (UBAACM): We foster open dialogue and peer support among university students, creating safe spaces for them to address challenges and find solutions together.
  • Addiction Rehab Programs: Our rehabilitation programs are rooted in the globally recognized principles of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), ensuring evidence-based care that truly works.
  • Addiction Relapse Prevention: We equip individuals with practical strategies to identify and overcome triggers, supporting sustained sobriety and long-term well-being.
  • Integrated Psychosocial and Mental Health Support: We know that addiction often walks hand-in-hand with mental health challenges. Our dedicated “Mental Health” program, staffed by medical professionals and compassionate volunteers, helps individuals build resilience and make lasting positive changes, aligning perfectly with the Ethiopian Ministry of Health’s national mental health strategy.

Powering Progress Through Unbreakable Partnerships

Our impact is amplified by the incredible collaborations we’ve built, both locally and internationally. These partnerships are the bedrock of our success, allowing us to extend our reach and deepen our expertise.

Strong Foundations at Home: Ethiopian Partnerships

We work hand-in-hand with key Ethiopian government bodies and local institutions, truly embedding our efforts within the national framework:

  • Ministry of Health (MoH) and Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA): We’re proud to work closely with the EFDA Tobacco Control and MoH’s Mental, Neurological and Substance Use Program (NMNSP), aligning our programs with national standards and contributing to a more professional and comprehensive approach to drug demand reduction across the country. Our instrumental role in the ratification of Ethiopia’s tobacco and alcohol control proclamation number 1112/2019 is a testament to this powerful synergy, showing our commitment to shaping public health policy at the highest levels.
  • Ministry of Education and Ethiopian Universities: We partner with various universities across Ethiopia to establish essential rehabilitation centers and training programs, building a stronger professional workforce equipped to address substance use disorders.
  • Federal Prison Commission: We’ve earned official recognition from the Federal Prison Commission for our vital work in addiction recovery, relapse prevention, and reducing recidivism among incarcerated individuals. This demonstrates our commitment to a holistic approach to rehabilitation within the justice system.

Expanding Our Reach: International Alliances

Our vision extends beyond Ethiopia’s borders, driven by strategic international collaborations that bring global best practices home:

  • United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Ethiopia: Our active collaboration with UNODC Ethiopia is a cornerstone of our international engagement. We conduct joint training initiatives on Drug Dependence Treatment, including specialized programs for high and mid-level leadership within the Federal Prison Commission. This partnership ensures our training programs are informed by, and often incorporate, globally recognized standards like the Universal Treatment Curriculum (UTC) and Universal Prevention Curriculum (UPC).
  • International Society of Substance Use Professionals (ISSUP): We are recognized as an Ethiopian training provider for ISSUP, connecting us to a global network of professionals dedicated to evidence-based substance use prevention and treatment.https://www.issup.net/training/education-providers/country/ET
  • African Union (AU) and Colombo Plan Drug Advisory Programme (DAP): We actively foster strong partnerships with the African Union and the Colombo Plan Drug Advisory Program (DAP). These collaborations are crucial for advancing a pan-African approach to drug demand reduction, sharing knowledge, and building capacity across the continent. Together, we are working towards harmonizing efforts and creating a united front against substance abuse throughout Africa and beyond.https://www.issup.net/knowledge-share/resources/2025-06/empowered-youth-transform-drug-prevention-across-africa

Our Impact: From Individuals to Millions

Our comprehensive strategy delivers tangible results, impacting lives at both individual and population levels:

  • Direct Impact: We’ve directly supported over 800 individuals through our treatment and recovery programs, empowering them to reclaim their lives.
  • Broad Reach: Our prevention programs have reached millions across Ethiopia, and we are expanding our reach across the African continent. This tiered intervention model, combining intensive support with widespread public health campaigns, maximizes our societal benefit.
  • Evidence-Informed Action: Our commitment to research, like our study on youth substance abuse knowledge and attitudes in Addis Ababa, ensures our interventions are always grounded in evidence. https://www.jscimedcentral.com/public/assets/articles/substanceabuse-5-1056.pdf
