“Unmasking the appeal – countering nicotine and tobacco addiction”
May 31, 2026
The 2026 World No Tobacco Day, organized by the World Health Organization (WHO), carries the theme:
“Unmasking the appeal – countering nicotine and tobacco addiction”
This campaign aims to expose how the tobacco and nicotine industry rebrands and repackages its products – using candy‑like flavors, attractive packaging, and aggressive digital marketing – to trap a new generation in addiction.

🎯 Key Campaign Objectives
- Expose hidden industry tactics – including the use of synthetic nicotine, nicotine salts, and other addiction‑enhancing additives.
- Promote stronger policy action – comprehensive bans on flavors, advertising (especially on digital platforms), and product designs that appeal to youth.
- Empower youth and the public – provide knowledge and tools to recognize and resist industry manipulation.
📊 Alarming Global Statistics (Ages 13–15)
According to new WHO data released in 2026:
| Indicator | Number | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Adolescents using tobacco products | At least 40 million | WHO, 2026 |
| Adolescents smoking cigarettes | Over 20 million | WHO, 2026 |
| Adolescents using e‑cigarettes | At least 15 million | WHO, 2026 |
| Youth are 9 times more likely than adults to use e‑cigarettes | – | WHO, 2026 |
| Global adult vaping prevalence | 1.9% | WHO, 2026 |
| Adolescent (13–15) vaping prevalence | 7.2% | WHO, 2026 |
“Young people are being deliberately targeted,” said Dr. Vinayak M. Prasad, Head of the WHO Tobacco Unit. “Flavors, attractive packaging, and misleading marketing are used to make highly addictive and harmful products seem fashionable. The result is a cycle of addiction that could undo years of tobacco control progress.”

🌍 The Ethiopian Context
Ethiopia has made significant progress in tobacco control. In 2025, at the WHO FCTC Conference of the Parties (CoP11) side event in Geneva, Ethiopia received the “2025 Good Governance for Tobacco Control Integrity Award” – an international recognition of its strong commitment.
On January 21, 2025 (Ethiopian calendar), a high‑level national ceremony was held to celebrate this award and to launch the 2025 Ethiopia Tobacco Industry Interference Index.
Ethiopia enforces strong measures under Proclamation No. 1112/2011:
- 100% smoke‑free public places
- Complete ban on tobacco advertising, promotion, and sponsorship (TAPS)
- Standardized packaging and labeling requirements
- Increased tobacco taxes

Remaining Challenges

According to the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) Ethiopia 2024, although overall tobacco use declined from 5% to 4.6%, daily smoking rates and cigarette consumption remain significant. This highlights the need for continued, coordinated efforts to close implementation gaps.
