Youth Mental Health and Substance Use in Ethiopia: Challenges and Potential Solutions

April 21,2026 , Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, MCDO

Currently, the intersection of substance abuse and mental health issues stands prominently among the social and health concerns in Ethiopia. This issue poses a national threat, as the productive youth segment of the population is the primary victim.

A recent study published by the renowned international scientific journal, Frontiers in Psychiatry, provides a detailed analysis of the current situation and the psychological pressures facing our youth.

The Link Between Substance Abuse and Mental Health

Research indicates that engaging in various forms of substance abuse and mental health disorders are inseparable. When young people begin regular use of alcohol, khat, and other narcotic drugs, their risk of developing mental illnesses increases significantly.

  • Anxiety and Depression: Substance use disrupts the chemical balance of the brain, leading to severe anxiety and hopelessness.
  • Behavioral Changes: As addiction strengthens, young people often experience social isolation, loss of motivation for work or education, and a decrease in self-esteem.

Root Causes Contributing to the Crisis

The study categorizes the root causes leading youth toward these problems into three main areas:

  1. Biological and Family History: Young people with a family history of addiction or mental health disorders have a wider risk of facing similar challenges.
  2. Social Crises: Instabilities, displacements, and the fraying of social ties within the country drive youth to seek comfort in substance use.
  3. Economic Pressures: Unemployment and the rising cost of living, which obscure future hope, expose young people to severe psychological stress.

Recommended Solutions

Solving this problem sustainably requires coordinated effort, as suggested by experts in the field and the study results:

  • Accessible Counseling Services: Mental health services and substance rehabilitation counseling centers must be widely established within health facilities and schools.
  • Awareness-Raising Efforts: Awareness campaigns are needed to ensure the community views mental health similarly to physical health and supports victims instead of condemning them.
  • Policy and Regulation: Implementing regulatory systems that make drugs not easily accessible to youth and strengthening national policies focused on youth development.

Summary

Meqoamia Community Development Organization (MCDO) believes that preserving the mental health of youth is the foundation of a nation’s development. Consequently, preventing substance abuse and raising mental health awareness is a shared responsibility that extends beyond health professionals to families, religious institutions, and civil society organizations.
